There are so many companies today that promise quality of their products but I trust only a few. I am a label-reader and take my time to research each product before I purchase. This past year I have been thrilled to offer my services as an independent Holistic Nutritionist to Bloom Organic Bazaar, an organic food distribution company operating from Mississauga. I buy their product from the local grocery store nearby but I know they also sell online. (Check them out here in case you are not in Toronto or Vancouver). I provide my opinion as a Nutrition Expert as we conduct food and health-related talks within the community. (Join me next time.)
I have met the team who puts in the hard work at not only sourcing the products but ensuring its optimal quality. They pay keen attention to where and how the product is grown, harvested and packed without chemicals. The farms use ancient and organic farming methods. Another fact that I am impressed with is that Bloom Organic provides complete traceability of their products. They also pay close attention to how the farmers are treated and remunerated. In my opinion, fair-trade is of utmost importance. A happy farmer is a happy world.
And that’s why I love Bloom. I feel good not only physically but mentally when I eat their products. I know that they have been doing this for more than 8-9 years and I encourage all of you to try their products. You may never go back to conventional.
So, as asked by the Bloom Team, I present my five absolute favourite Bloom products.
Bloom Organic Pure Basmati Rice
I chose these to be on top of the list because I used to be a terrible rice maker. I could make a lot of complicated dishes but when it came to rice- I either over or undercook them. (LOL, this is not a joke- Lots of people can attest to this. Haha!) I used to ask my husband to cook the rice. I don’t know what it is – but this rice is so easy to prepare. And the grains are so fragrant! From the moment you take them out of the bag to the moment they are ready and fluffy, the aroma of heaven well- cooked long grain rice is just amazing. Did you know beans paired with rice contain all amino acids so that your body can make protein? It is also a great gluten-free option. I cook brown rice often too for its higher fibre content and anti-inflammatory properties.
Bloom Organic Cumin Seeds
As soon as I had my baby, my Mom made cumin water which I was to drink throughout the day. It helps with digestion – which is so crucial for postpartum, and it is equally beneficial to help relieve gas. The baby
would reap the benefits through breast milk. But when I found out Cumin seeds also help boost milk supply, you bet I was eating those seeds like they were going out of style. Yes, the taste may not suit everyone, but the mommy in me doesn’t care. I can eat anything to make sure my baby is getting complete nutrition, and on that scale, Cumin seeds are yummy in comparison.
Did you know one tablespoon of Cumin seeds contains 4 milligram of iron which is 22% of daily value! If you eat these seeds with a piece of fruit or salad (basically anything rich in vitamin C) they can help increase your vitamin C intake. Hence, help boost your immune system.
Bloom Organic Turmeric Powder
I cannot write enough about turmeric and its benefits. I mean its anti-inflammatory benefits are just abundant. They aid recovery after birth, act as an antidepressant postpartum. It improves brain function, improves memory and dopamine levels. It is also used in India to help boost milk supply. It also helps gently detox the liver – which was of enormous benefit to me as I had an emergency c-section. I enjoyed this queen of spice sprinkled in my lentil soup (Dal) or mixed with honey. Its also added to almost all Indian foods, which I eat a lot. Now that baby is nearly a year old; I add a bit to his food too. I trust the purity of Bloom products so much that I feel good about giving it to my baby.
Bloom Organic Jaggery (Gur)
For those who know, Jaggery (Gur or unrefined sugar) has a plethora of benefits! It’s used all over Asia, South America and Africa to add a distinctive flavour to their dishes. Jaggery is rich in several essential
vitamins and minerals like potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium, calcium and phosphorus and antioxidants. The iron content in this sweet treat helps boost Red Blood Cells level. Hence it can be beneficial in pregnancy, during menstruation and postpartum. In fact, a tiny amount can be given to your child after they turn 1 (always speak to your child’s Pediatrician before introducing new foods). In anybody, it can help strengthen bones, detox liver, prevent constipation and is overall great for intestinal
health. I usually have some right after food to promote digestion or in my tea as a sweetener.
Bloom Organic Lentils
Lentils are my superheroes. I love all of them, but my Go To are Chana Dal, Mung Split, Black Eye Beans and Mung Dal Mogar. They all cook really well in the slow cooker. I usually put a cup of washed Dal in the slow cooker with adequate water (usually 1:4 ratio) and leave it on high for 3-4 hours. Then I add a basic tempering of cumin, onion, tomato, a pinch of turmeric and chilly powder and mix well. Lunch or dinner ready!
Fact: Lentils can provide us abundant nutrition. They are packed with protein which makes it an excellent meat alternative. They are also high in fibre, which is needed by our body for intestinal health! It also helps you feel fuller longer and it can help lower cholesterol and blood sugar. They are full of vitamins and minerals and are a great source of iron too.
